The subject of this FS model is a Tornado ADV "special color" (Air Defence Variant) in service with Italian Air Force AMI 21°Gruppo (ex 53°Stormo based to Cameri airbase Guglielmo Chiarini) of 36° Stormo 'Helmut Seidl'.
The 36° Stormo second squadron (12° gruppo) operated F104 Starfighter until 1995 when it was re-equipped with these leased Tornado F. Mk3. The unit was the first AMI gruppo to operate the Tornado ADV.The gruppo insigna is a black prancing horse,
superimposed on a red bow and arrow on a green disk. 12° Gruppo was declared combat ready in february 1995 and began flying CAP's over the Adriatic in support of Operation Deny Flight, alongside RAF F.Mk3 deployed at Gioia del Colle.

About the true aircraft.

The Tornado initially known as M.R.C.A. Multi-Role Combat Aircraft, was designed in the early 1970 after the failure of the AFVG strike-aircraft programme, primarily to meet a RAF requirement for a Camberra replacement in the interdictor, strike and reconnaissance role.
The programme eventually overcame the hurdles and difficulties to become a prime example of succesfull international collaboration. By 1997 the Tornado was still in production (23 years after its first flight) and almost 1000 had been built, making it one of the most successful European aircraft programmes of the post-war era. As well as being a political and industrial success, the Tornado has been a military success, too, becoming one of the most effective and popular aircraft ever fielded by a European air arm, and standing comparison with the best that the USA or the Soviet Union could produce.
The three nations commissioning the Tornado are presented in prime contractor Panavia by their national aircraft industries, currently British Aerospace, DASA (Germany) and Alenia (Italy), which have programme shares of 42.5 , 42.5 and 15 per cent, respectively. Assembly lines have been established in all three countries.
